This Privacy Policy explains how Tethr ("Tethr," the "app," "we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use Tethr to turn your iPhone camera into a webcam for your computer.
Tethr is developed by Sverre Anker Larsen Grønaas ("we"), based in Norway. If you have any questions about this policy or about how Tethr handles information, you can contact us at [insert your contact email].
Tethr is built with privacy as a starting point. The video from your iPhone is sent directly to your own computer over a USB cable. It is not uploaded to us, stored on our servers, or shared with any third party.
Camera video. To work as a webcam, Tethr captures the video image from your iPhone camera and transfers it to your computer over USB. This video is processed in real time and displayed on your computer. Tethr does not save the video by default, and the video is never sent to us or to any external server.
Camera and image settings. Settings you choose in the app — such as resolution, rotation, brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, and zoom — are processed locally to adjust the image. They are stored only on your own device.
Device information for the connection. To establish the USB connection between your iPhone and your computer, Tethr uses device identifiers (such as the device UDID) and system services provided by Apple (Apple Mobile Device Support) on the computer. This is used solely to create the local USB connection between your own devices.
Local diagnostic logs. Tethr may write technical logs locally on your computer (for example, frame rate, latency, resolution, and connection status) to help with troubleshooting. These logs are stored only on your own machine and are not sent to us automatically.
Camera access (iOS). Required so that Tethr can capture the video image that is sent to your computer. Without this permission, the app cannot function.
USB / device connectivity.Tethr connects to your computer over USB using Apple's device connectivity services. You will be asked to approve "Trust This Computer" on your iPhone the first time you connect it to a given computer. This is a standard Apple security step that authorizes the local connection between your own devices.
You can withdraw permissions at any time in your device settings. Note that if you revoke camera access, Tethr will no longer be able to function as a webcam.
The information described above is used solely to:
We do not use this information for profiling, advertising, or sale.
We do not share your video, images, or personal information with third parties.
Tethr relies on certain third-party components in order to function:
These components run locally and do not receive your video for storage or external processing. When you download the app through the App Store, Apple may collect information in accordance with Apple's own policies.
Tethr does not store your video stream. Your settings are stored locally on your device. Diagnostic logs are stored locally on your computer and can be deleted by you at any time by removing Tethr's log folder. We do not retain any of your data on our systems, because we do not receive it.
Because the video is transferred directly between your own devices over USB and is not sent to external servers, exposure is limited. You are responsible for the security of your own devices (your iPhone and your computer). No method of transmission is completely secure, but Tethr's local, server-free architecture is designed to minimize risk.
Tethr is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us at [insert your contact email] and we will address it.
Depending on where you live (for example, under the GDPR in the EU/EEA and the UK, or the CCPA in California), you may have the right to access, correct, or delete personal information we hold about you. Because Tethr does not collect or store personal information about you on our systems, we typically have no such data to provide or delete. For any questions about your rights, contact us at [insert your contact email].
Tethr processes video and settings locally on your own devices, regardless of where you are located. Any download and update of the app is handled by the Apple App Store in accordance with Apple's terms.
We may update this Privacy Policy if the app changes — for example, if we add new features such as Wi-Fi transfer, audio, user accounts, or cloud services. Material changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date at the top of this policy and, where appropriate, communicated in the app or on the App Store listing. Your continued use of Tethr after an update means you accept the revised policy.
